PCI Express Gen 2 Switches Deliver Industry-Leading Performance, Design Flexibility for the Recently Launched OCTEON II Internet Application Processors
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- April 14, 2009– PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leading global supplier of PCI Express® (PCIe®) switch silicon with more than 60 percent market share, today announced support for the OCTEON™ II processors from Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage, wireless, video and security applications. PLX® PCIe switches – which provide the interconnect backbone of board- and system-level products in the communications, storage, server, compute, embedded-control, and consumer markets – help maximize performance and efficiency.
As a Cavium PACE (Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions) member, PLX will collaborate with Cavium engineers to assure the companies’ respective products are optimized in their common customers’ designs. Those products are represented in the PLX ExpressLane™ family – the industry’s most extensive lineup of PCI-SIG® PCIe 2.0 (Gen 2) specification-compliant devices, which includes PCIe switches ranging in density from three to 24 ports and from four to 96 lanes. ExpressLane switches also feature several industry-only features – integrated direct-memory access, non-transparency ports, x16 support, as well as spread spectrum clock (SSC) isolation dual virtual channels and other performance-enhancing attributes such as multicast and multi-root.
“Today, PLX and Cavium are working together on several tier-1 designs using OCTEON processors,” said David Raun, PLX vice president of marketing and business development at PLX. “In those designs, PLX PCI Express switching technology provides a crucial interconnect between OCTEON and other diverse internal elements. Moving forward, PLX is strategically developing PCI Express switches to support the Cavium OCTEON II processors. Our collaboration will deliver industry-leading processing and interconnect technology to worldwide designers of high-performance systems.”
“PLX is a global leader in PCI Express interconnect technology with extensive system level expertise,” said Rajiv Khemani, vice president and general manager, Networking and Communications Division at Cavium Networks. “Working with PLX enables our joint customers to build a highly flexible, scalable and configurable platform that connects multiple OCTEON processors and peripherals with extremely high-bandwidth and low latency. We welcome PLX as a valued PACE member and look forward to continuing our successful working relationship.”
Cavium Networks next-generation OCTEON II Internet Application Processor (IAP) family is designed for the next generation of Hypernetworks serving enterprise, data center, access and service provider markets which require support for converged data, voice and video. Both the PLX Switches and OCTEON II target applications including switches, routers, appliances, equipment for 3G, WiMAX, LTE, wireless LAN, and unified storage systems and adapters. The OCTEON II family integrates 1 to 32 MIPS64 cores, up to 75 Application Acceleration Engines for quality of service, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and regular expression processing, up to 400Gbps of DDR3 memory bandwidth, and up to 100Gbps of network connectivity while consuming only 2W to 60W across the entire family.
