PEX 8111 Enables High-Definition Video Playback over PCI Express
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – July 9, 2007 -- PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leading global supplier of PCI Express® switches and bridges, today announced PLX’s PCIe bridging technology has been incorporated into Broadcom’s new Media PC high-definition (HD) video solutions. The PLX® ExpressLane™ PEX 8111 PCI-to-PCIe bridge is providing the high-speed interconnect component of the Media PC family’s card-level and chipset products. The PEX 8111 delivers PCIe throughput of up to 2.5Gbps to the Broadcom media PC card and chipsets to enable computers with flawless playback of Blu-ray Disk™, HD DVD, and HD broadcast and download content.
“Broadcom selected the PEX 8111 for the media PC card and chipsets because of the device’s low power consumption and ability to bridge seamlessly between the conventional, still widely used PCI bus and the high-performance PCIe serial interconnect technology,” said Allen Light, director of product marketing for Broadcom’s Media PC line of business. “Our cost effective media PC solutions are available in three add-in card formats including desktop PCI Express, PCI Express mini-card and ExpressCard™ 34, as well as a chipset solution for PC motherboard applications.”
“PCI Express continues its rapid expansion into virtually all technology segments, including consumer-oriented applications such as high-definition video,” said Chris Kissel, semiconductor research analyst for In-Stat. “Incorporating the PEX 8111 as the PCI Express element in the media PC line reflects Broadcom’s and PLX’s understanding of and commitment to their respective markets, and will help accelerate high-definition video in the mid-range PC segment.”
“As the smallest, lowest-power bridge on the market today, the PEX 8111 provides highly efficient bridging between a single PCIe lane to the standard 32-bit PCI bus,” said Steve Moore, PLX senior marketing manager for bridge products. “The device consumes less than 400 milliwatts of power and is available in a 10x10mm package. The PEX 8111 is compliant with the PCIe base 1.0a standard, as well as the most recent PCI 3.0 specification, and has earned a position on the PCI-SIG® Integrators List.”
Leveraging its widely deployed and field-proven technologies in the high-definition set-top box and consumer HD DVD and Blu-Ray player markets, Broadcom's Media PC technology provides the highest-quality video playback of multi-format (VC-1, H.264 and MPEG-2) HD content for the mainstream PC market. With total power consumption of approximately 2 watts, the Media PC solutions help extend battery life on notebook PCs, enabling full-length movie playback.
Extensive, Advanced Family of PCI Express Switches, Bridges
The world’s leading provider of interconnect silicon, PLX has the industry’s most advanced family of PCIe switches and bridges, now totaling seventeen devices -- most of which are in full production today. The PLX ExpressLane family now includes 13 PCIe switches with wide-ranging lane and port configurations, and four PCIe bridges that provide PCI, PCI-X and local-bus support.
